Maybe a dog could buy you some time
„Maybe a dog could buy you some time”, she said with that bossy certainty I didn’t like about her.
“A dog? I am running out of time, and you seriously suggest I should get a dog?”
“No, I mean you should ask a dog to buy you some time.” I didn’t get what she meant and raised my eyebrows. “You really don’t know?” She looked at me funny.
“You are being serious? How can dogs buy time?”
“Well, nobody knows, because the dogs are just the middlemen and won’t tell us. But they can arrange more time for you.”
“How do I pay? How do I ask a dog?”
“Any dog can help you, but you need to find one, who can come with you. Stray dogs are best, you can usually spend some time with them, pay food and a visit at the vet and nobody will miss them if they don’t show up for a while.”
“How does it work?”
“As I said, nobody really knows.”She picked up a pebble from the ground and started scratching lines onto the wooden bench we were sitting on. “Probably like this”, she said, pointing on the bubble she just drew. “The dogs get a key to enter your time and then stretch it. Everybody else will have to hurry to catch up with you, for them time becomes really really tight. The dog can’t hold it forever, but it should be enough for you. Do you understand?”
“No.” I had no idea what she was talking about, a dog stretching my time. “Don’t the others get more time? It looks like they have to go a much longer timeline?” The drawing didn’t make sense to me.
“Exactly.” She smiled. “The others spend much more time to end up at the same place as you which gives you more time. You will take a shortcut, while others take a detour.”
“Eh. Ok. I am still not sure, if I understand.”
“Do you want me to help you finding a dog or not?” She became impatient , I had to decide quickly. I knew it was the only chance I had. I stood up, wiped the dust of my trousers like an abashed child which doesn’t know where to put its hands. “Yes, let’s find a dog.”
